IN 3DSMAX

SAVING AND LOADING UVW MAPS IN 3DS MAX

imp_controls

IMP_CONTROLS

This is a tutorial to show you how to save a uvw map and load onto another object in 3ds max.

The game this model is for is Jedi Academy but you could use these instructions for models used in Doom3 Quake 4 and others.

You may ask why would i want to save a uvw map or load it onto another object? but look at the picture above here, the model was made by cloning 1 object 4 times to have 5 objects at the end, why uvw unwrap all of them when they are identical, you only need to map 1 , save the map and load it onto the other 4, it saves lots of time.

To follow this tutorial its best that you lokk at the 2 tutorials on uvw mapping in 3ds max.

OK, now we have our first object unwrapped in the edit window , we have all the faces laid out for optimum use of the texture we are going to make, but this object is 1 of 5 identical objects that make up our model, do i have to uvw unwrap all of them or is there a way to speed things up, well yes there is, if you look in the edit window you will notice you can "save as" well lets do that ,save the uvw map in your scene folder (or mesh) so you can find it again and its best to name it with a name appropriate to the model you are making for easy referance. left image below.

HOW TO SAVE A UVW MAP IN 3DS MAX EDIT WINDOW

Click on the next object and click on the modifier list look down to uvw unwrap and click on it, you will see a new line has appeard in the stack above "Editable Poly" click the little + symbol and click on selct face it will turn yellow now, i always do this as it lets the selected faces become visible in the perspective window.

Next click "Edit" and the edit window will show its self if it doesnt click it agian, now with the edit window open click "file" then click "load UVs" look for the uvw map you saved earlier and click on it to load it and there before you eys it appears in the uvw map box, follow this for the others and you will have saved yourself lots of time.

Adding the UVW UNWRAP modifier in max, just scroll down the "Modifier List" and its near the bottom of the list.

LOADING A UVW MAP IN THE EDIT WINDOW OF 3DS MAX

The "Edit" button brings up the (you guessed it)Edit window, this section of the GUI is quite usefull and as you can see you can save and load the uvw maps from here too, i like to do it thru the edit window as i can see the results instantly.
